“Le 10 bis”, a chic and quiet 4-star Parisian hotel – Meanderings through France n° 246

By Annick Dournes & Frederic de Poligny

“Le 10 bis” is a luxury 4-star boutique hotel located in “Les Ternes” one of Paris most select districts with beautiful Haussmann buildings, expensive shops and large avenues. Staying there you will enjoy the quietness of a good residential area while being at walking distance from the Champs Elysées or the Arc de Triomphe.

Before being a stylish 4-star hotel “Le 10 bis” was a place of sulphurous reputation. The former owner was Lucienne Goldfarb also known as “Katia the Redhead”. Being Jewish she succeeded to flee to France from Poland in the 1930’s. Her parents and her brother were not so fortunate they were deported and died. She opened a hotel in the chic 17th district of Paris in the late 1950’s making it a place where women of easy virtue could discretely “entertain” their clients. Later her hotel became a famous swap club where unknowns and celebrities alike “rubbed shoulders”… The hotel being located at the 10 bis rue du Débarcadère, insiders just referred to the place as “Le 10 Bis”. This is the reason why the present owner named his hotel Le10 Bis.

These days are long gone and today after being through extensive works of renovation “Le10 bis” is an elegant 4-star hotel welcoming tourists and businessmen. The 21 rooms and 2 suites have been elegantly decorated in a sleek contemporary design with urban chic influences. Considering Parisian standards they all are pretty spacious. Noble materials such as marble, wood, glass or cotton have been chosen in soft tones mixing beige, ochre and blue. They all have a king-size bed, mini bar, tea and coffee set, a laptop-size safe and a very good soundproofing. The rooms located on the 5th floor even have a typical Haussmann balcony with a finely worked rail… and a view!

Le 10 bis was the first hotel of the KM Collection, that now owns a total of four hotels, all located in the western part of Paris in the triangle drawn by the 3 Metro stations, Opéra, Saint Lazare and Porte Maillot. Three of them are 4* hotels and the last one is a 3*.

Le 10 bis’ breakfast is served in a cosy lounge with designer furniture chosen in the same harmony of colours as in the rooms. If not big the buffet offers a good selection of croissants and pastries, baguette and other breads, fresh fruits and juices, yogurts and cheese, cold meats and eggs cooked to your liking.

All day long guests can come here and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with brownies or madeleines – the sponge finger cake with a little bump on top made famous by Marcel Proust – all free of charge. You can also have a drink, the choice is large, or a glass of red, white or rosé French wine, with extra charge this time.

The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant but there are numerous restaurants at walking distance from the hotel and of course Paris is filled with great places to have dinner.
