Tucked away on the east coast of Phú Quốc island on Long Beach is every traveller’s dream place to stumble upon. Those who have experienced this gem will know that Rory’s was once situated on the west coast of the island. but its namesake decided to make the move due to an increase in industrial construction. Rory’s Beach Bar is a 30-minute drive from the main town of Duong Duong in Phú Quốc. Whether zipping on a motorbike or via local transport, the drive takes you through the tropical vegetation of the west side of the island.
While soaking up the fresh salty sea air, you’ll notice families playing, laughing, and cheering on the roadside. There’s also the option to stop at one of the local “Chi Oi’s” spaza shops for an ice-cold beer while relaxing with the cutest little Phú Quốc puppies. As you cruise down the west coast, a bright blue sign comes into view on the right-hand side. It’s the kind of sign that makes you grin and pulls you in like, the island’s undercurrents.

As you drive down into the car park you are greeted with an array of beautiful flowers and tropical foliage round an 18-hole par three mini golf course. We came, we saw, and we played almost immediately.It was heaps of fun, as you can see on our childish little faces. As you walk along the wooden pathway you notice captivating tree houses on your left, which owner Rory built as accommodation.
At the end of the decked path magnificent Rory’s Beach Bar comes into view. elegantly positioned facing the Gulf of Thailand. Either Rory himself or one of the friendly staff will welcome you with a smile, every time. The bar is designed and shaped like boat and the open-plan restaurant is about the size of a basketball court.
Bring your friends and family, or come alone. All are welcome and there is plenty of seating for big groups as well as solo nomads looking for a place to blend in and chill out.
The deck outside has a simple yet comforting design, filled with brightly colored lounge chairs that beg you to kick off your shoes, sink your toes in the sand, and soak up the sun. Or, if you’re feeling active, check out Rory’s range of activities such as snooker, mini golf, a seawater-filled rock pool, darts, foosball, and a massive custom-built plasma screen TV, which will please all of you sports junkies looking for a spot to watch the big game.
Good food, nice views, cold drinks. What more could you want in a beach bar?
Food, Glorious Food!
Now for the food! I don’t know about you, but for me, good food at great beach bar is a winner-winner chicken dinner moment for me.
Rory’s offers a wide range of dishes, from scrumptious bar snacks to wholesome burgers and, in my personal opinion, the best fish and chips in Vietnam! Rory came over and welcomed us graciously as he does every guest, then walked us through the menu. My better half and I like to order a bit of everything. We had to try the beer-battered fish and chips with a side of veg and salad. The tenderness of the delectable barramundi just melts in your mouth. We also felt like some nibbles so we were encouraged to try the Phu Quoc salt and pepper squid. The texture of the batter was just perfect and was complemented by famous traditional fish sauce from Phu Quoc Island.You’ll find most dishes don’t come without it! Lastly, we had to sink our teeth into the chicken schnitzel. This comes with a light garden salad, some skinny fries, and a peppercorn sauce.

If I were to recommend any of the three, I’d be shouting for at least two more portions of that barramundi fish and chips.
Be sure to wash it all down with cocktail or listen to DJ jams on Sundays.
The Magic Of Rory’s Beach Bar is that it’s epitome of how a beach bar should look and feel. Sand-in-toes setting, friendly service, good food and drinks, and the kind of place you could happily spend your days, and write about in the dead of winter when you’re craving far flung sun and surf.
